Why Is My Oven Smoking? Causes and When to Call for Repair

An oven that smokes when you turn it on is alarming, but it is not always a sign of a serious problem. The most common cause is simply burned food residue on the bottom or heating element. However, some causes do require professional attention.

Common Causes of Oven Smoke

• Food residue — spills and drips bake onto the oven floor and smoke when reheated. This is the most common cause.
• New oven burn-in — brand new ovens often smoke during the first few uses as manufacturing oils and coatings burn off. This is normal.
• Heating element damage — a damaged bake or broil element can arc and smoke. Look for bright spots or visible damage.
• Excess grease buildup — heavy grease deposits on the walls and ceiling of the oven can smoke at high temperatures
• Faulty gas igniter — in gas ovens, a weak igniter can allow gas to build up slightly before igniting, creating a puff of smoke

When to Call a Professional

If cleaning the oven does not stop the smoking, or if you see sparking from the heating element, turn off the oven and call for repair. Electrical arcing and gas buildup are safety hazards that need immediate professional attention.
